Scottish Rangers Liquidators BDO To Go To Supreme Court To Overturn Ruling

Scottish Championship side Rangers' liquidators BDO announced that it will "seek to overturn a Court of Session ruling on the club’s use of Employee Benefit Trusts" between '01 and '10, according to Paul Forsyth of the LONDON TIMES. This month, three judges ruled that "the controversial scheme" administered during a nine-year period had broken tax rules. In a development that "came as no surprise to those who have followed the long-running saga," it was confirmed on Monday that BDO has asked for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court in London. If granted, "it could extend the so-called Big Tax Case for at least another year." Rangers used EBTs to "give millions of pounds of tax-free loans to players and other staff," but U.K. tax authority HMRC argued that they were "salary payments and therefore subject to tax." BDO said, "If the company successfully obtains leave to appeal, the appeal will be heard in the Supreme Court in London. The joint liquidators are not in a position at this stage to make any further comment in respect of the appeal" (LONDON TIMES, 12/1).
