NBA Mexico Dir Raúl Zárraga Discusses League's Growth, Future

For the NBA's office in Mexico, the Sacramento Kings-Boston Celtics game on Dec. 3 in Mexico City means the "tipoff" or start of activities "which it hopes will be greater every year," according to Carlos Contreras Legaspi of LA AFICIÓN. NBA Mexico Dir Raúl Zárraga discussed the league's possibilities for growth in Mexico and the development of the sport, "which has various possible scenarios in a country where basketball is one of the most practiced and followed sports." He said, "There are many model projects that we are trying to replicate, like Brazil, with games between NBA teams and teams from the local league." Zárraga said that future games between teams from the Mexican league and NBA teams "depend on the development of the league." He also said that without the support of sponsors, "there is no way to have regular season or preseason games." Zárraga: "I don't know if there will be one or two games [for 2016], there is nothing secure, the only thing for sure is that each year we will be looking for more" (LA AFICIÓN, 11/16).
