Sporting Events To Go Ahead As Scheduled Around Europe After Paris Attacks

UEFA said that Champions League and Europa League matches "are 'scheduled to go ahead as planned' next week," according to the BBC. Many sporting fixtures across Europe "were postponed or cancelled following the attacks in Paris on Friday." Monaco said that it "will prevent fans of Belgian side Anderlecht from attending" their Europa League meeting on Nov. 26. A UEFA spokesperson said, "UEFA is working closely with the home clubs and local authorities to ensure all necessary measures are implemented to guarantee safety for all involved. We have not issued directives about travelling fans. It is up to the relevant authorities to decide on such matters." French league games this weekend "will go ahead, but away fans will not be allowed in to the stadiums for security reasons." The Premier League said that matches this weekend "will go ahead but it will meet with clubs later in the week to discuss security measures." There will be no changes to fixtures in Germany's Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga, but fans "have been told to leave pyrotechnics and firecrackers at home." In Spain, La Liga President Javier Tebas said that "all matches will go ahead, including Saturday's El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Bernabeu." Matches in the Belgian Pro League "will take place as planned, with increased security measures" (BBC, 11/18).

SHOW MUST GO ON
: The SID reported the Bundesliga clubs "unanimously agreed to go ahead and play the 13th matchweek of the '15-16 season this weekend." Only Bayern Munich "did not respond in time" to the survey conducted by the SID. Many Bundesliga clubs "have held talks with security authorities following Tuesday's terror threat that led to the cancellation of the int'l friendly between Germany and the Netherlands" (SID, 11/18). In a separate piece, the SID wrote that Germany's Handball Bundesliga (HBL), German Hockey League (DEL) and Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) "will all go ahead with their regular scheduled games this weekend" (SID, 11/18).
