League Notes: No Foundation To Genetic Testing For Sporting Ability, Study Finds

An "explosion in genomic technology has sparked a sideline in sports screening," as kids’ DNA is "scoured for signs of a budding Sally Pearson or Massimo Luongo." Now an expert panel, writing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, has "dismissed the trend as the genetic equivalent of snake oil." The paper said, "There is no evidence that existing genetic tests provide useful information regarding predisposition for a particular sport, the response to a particular training program or predisposition to exercise-related injury." A "shadow industry has sprung up," testing for genes implicated in sports prowess. The expert panel’s June survey found 39 companies marketing such tests, up from 22 two years ago (THE AUSTRALIAN, 11/18). ... Delhi government's probe into the irregularities of the Delhi and District Cricket Association has suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India "should suspend the DDCA, while confirming that this probe has nothing to do with the forthcoming India-South Africa Test in the capital next month" (IBN LIVE, 11/17).
