Former Channel Nine CEO Emerges As Potential ARL Commission Candidate

Departing Channel Nine CEO David Gyngell "emerged as a potential candidate" for the Australian Rugby League Commission "in a move that could mirror" the Australian Football League's appointment of former News Corp. Australia CEO Kim Williams, according to Brad Walter of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. Gyngell, who has stepped down after eight-years at the helm of Nine, is "highly regarded in league circles and would have strong support across the game if he was interested in becoming a commissioner." Gyngell would also bring "invaluable media and business experience" after helping to save Nine from financial collapse in '12. In his second stint as Nine CEO, he also negotiated three broadcast agreements with the NRL, "including August's record" A$925M ($650M), five-year deal for four free-to-air matches per week on the network from '18. The AFL appointed Williams as a commissioner in February last year "after his exit from News Corp." The next chance for Gyngell to join the ARL Commission will be in February when three commissioners -- Ian Elliot, Chris Sarra and Wayne Pearce -- "step down" before the '15 annual general meeting after completing three-year terms (SMH, 11/10).
