Several High-Profile British Athletes Have Funding Withdrawn Before Rio Olympics

European 100m Champion James Dasaolu lost his funding as an individual athlete as UK Athletics "promoted the five athletes it will be supporting during the build-up to the Rio Olympics," according to Lewis & Munnery of the LONDON TIMES. Dasaolu, who has been downgraded to receive funding as a relay runner, "is one of several high-profile British athletes to have their funding withdrawn by the governing body." Former European Indoor 400m Champion Perri Shakes-Drayton is also "relegated to receive only relay funding," while Hannah England, Lawrence Clarke and Eilish McColgan "lose their funding completely." McColgan tweeted her disappointment:

Five athletes have been handed world class funding for the first time as Dina Asher-Smith, Sophie Hitchon, Zharnel Hughes, Laura Muir and Lorraine Ugen have been "added to the athletes receiving podium level funding" (LONDON TIMES, 11/9).
