Rangers Will Not Accept Any Attempt To Strip The Club Of Titles

Scottish Championship side Rangers said that "a line should be drawn under the past for the good of Scottish football as they stated they would not accept any attempt to strip titles," according to the PA. The club is awaiting the outcome of its "appeal into attempts to enforce payment" of a £250,000 ($377,910) fine "imposed on oldco Rangers over the liquidated club's failure to disclose dozens of payments to players during the first decade of the century." But the debate "has been revived" after three Court of Session judges allowed HM Revenue & Customs' appeal over the club's use of Employee Benefit Trusts to avoid tax. Some rival fans have called for the Scottish Professional Football League "to strip titles after the judges argued that players might not have signed for Rangers were it not for the tax-free payments" (PA, 11/9). The BBC reported Rangers said that Scottish football should "move on" from last week's EBTs ruling. A club statement said, "There is no need for further SPFL consideration. They should be saying it is time for everyone to move on and work together for the greater good of the game Scottish football has suffered enough." Questions "have been asked about whether the scheme gave Rangers an unfair sporting advantage." A previous league investigation "ruled it did not." The club's statement added, "It is our irrevocable belief that this club's history, including its many successes, is beyond debate. Rangers cannot countenance or accept any talk, attempts or actions designed to undermine what this club has achieved throughout its long history" (BBC, 11/9).
