New Zealand's Government Approves $790,000 Investment In Multi-Surfing Event

New Zealand's government has confirmed a NZ$1.2M ($790,000) investment "in a multi-surfing event over the next three years," according to STUFF. The initial Ultimate Waterman "was held this year and was won by Raglan surfer Daniel Kereopa." The invitation event, backed by Surfing New Zealand, "sees competitors tested on longboards, regular boards, Stand Up Paddleboards, waka racing and big wave riding." Minister for Economic Development Steven Joyce confirmed that the Major Events Development Fund "would make the major contribution with the next event set down for March 12-20." Plans for '16 include the introduction of two new disciplines -- the "underwater strength run and swim" and "prone paddleboard" race -- "taking the number of disciplines athletes will compete in to eight" (STUFF, 11/9).
