Tuesday's FIBA-Euroleague Meeting Could Shape Future Of European Basketball

The future of European basketball "is in play," according to Darío Ojeda of EL CONFIDENCIAL. FIBA will on Tuesday host a Euroleague delegation for a "transcendental meeting." Various subjects "are on the table, like the rejection of a new calendar and the new competition FIBA proposed to several clubs a few months ago." But "what is important is the backdrop: the fight between both parties for control of club competitions." There are two options: "either maintain the status quo -- with each party receiving part of the pie -- or let everything come under one umbrella, which is FIBA's intention." Those involved in the meeting will include FIBA General Secretary Patrick Baumann, FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel and FIBA Central Board member José Luis Sáez. Opposite the FIBA execs will be Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu and representatives of the league's 11 License A clubs. In the last four months, FIBA's position "has not budged one centimeter, so on Tuesday it will once again face a rejection." The clubs will say no to a 16-team competition, league format, Final Four and €30M ($33M) in prizes -- "significantly more" than they currently receive -- "if this means losing control" (EL CONFIDENCIAL, 11/2).
