Football Notes: Dutch FA Names Henk Ten Cate 'Special Advisor'

The Dutch FA (KNVB) appointed Henk Ten Cate as a "special advisor to consider the future of Dutch football" after a "disastrous" Euro 2016 qualifying campaign that saw it fail to qualify for next year's event in France. Ten Cate, who in the past worked for Barcelona, Chelsea and Ajax, among others, is tasked with "rethinking Dutch football." He will be joined by KNVB Coordinator of Football Development Lennard van Ruiven and KNVB U16 coach Edwin Petersen, and three other yet to be selected consultants (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 10/22). ... Liga MX side Atlas President Gustavo Guzmán said that he has retained 80% of his players' salaries since September as a "reprimand for poor results." The club has earned 17 points through 13 games this season. Guzmán said, "There have been some economic reprimands for the results, I spoke with them and we do not have the points we should after the changes that were made" (RÉCORD, 10/21). ... On Sept. 30 Spanish Football League (LFP) President Javier Tebas "took a big step" to push a top women's football league in Spain. That day, Tebas announced the creation of the Association of Women's Football Clubs. The "second big step" came on Thursday, at the first meeting of the clubs in Spain's women's league, which took place at LFP HQ (AS, 10/22). ... A FIFA investigation into Germany's World Cup-winning captain and coach Franz Beckenbauer "has been concluded." The world governing body's adjudication committee "will now decide whether to take any action" against the 70-year old, who was one of 22 men to vote on the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Beckenbauer was previously banned by FIFA for "failing to cooperate" with its inquiry into the bidding process (BBC, 10/21). ... UEFA has "found itself a laughing stock for opening disciplinary proceedings" against Man City after its fans "booed the Champions League anthem." Fans "mocked European football’s governing body after it confirmed a case had been opened against the Premier League leaders" following a report from its match delegate at its 2-1 win over Sevilla on Wednesday. The Manchester City Supporters Club chair branded UEFA “petty”, suggesting it would be better off "focusing on the scandal" over a £1.3M ($2M) payment that has engulfed President Michel Platini. Man City was "stunned to learn they could be punished over the booing," which has become a "regular occurrence prior to Champions League games" at the Etihad Stadium since the club was sanctioned for breaching UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations last year (London TELEGRAPH, 10/22). ... Former Trinidad and Tobago Captain David Nakhid "officially entered the running to become FIFA president" on Wednesday, he confirmed to AFP. Nakhid: "I submitted formally my candidacy paperwork last week in Zurich. I have the support of five members states of the international federation, but it is better that they remain anonymous for now" (AFP, 10/21).
