La Liga Club Sevilla Remains Without Shirt Sponsor After Rejecting Israel’s Offer

La Liga side Sevilla "is one of Spanish football's fashionable teams," but after seven La Liga matchdays and two in the Champions League, it remains "without a principal sponsor," according to LIBERTAD DIGITAL. The club is waiting for an offer "that meets all its desires." It has received a "multitude of offers in recent weeks." The offers are of "various natures, some of them as exotic as they are economically significant." One of the proposals that was "closest to becoming a sponsor" of Sevilla came from the government of Israel several weeks ago. The country wanted to promote itself as a destination for tourists through the Sevilla shirt. The Israeli proposal was substantial enough for Sevilla to accept it: €5M ($5.7M), more than double what Malaysia was paying as a shirt sponsor through last season. But the team, led by President José Castro, "stayed true to its principles, which value ethics over economic concerns." Sevilla "clearly does not want to get involved in political matters and believed that advertising Israel had significant political connotations" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 10/13).
