Football Notes: Porto's Signing Of Iker Casillas Driving Up Shirt Sales

Portuguese club Porto's signing this summer of former Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas "provoked growth for the club's brand," and its shirt sales have reportedly shot up more than 10% since the signing. Porto's marketing department was predicting a 3% increase in shirt sales before the season, "a prediction that has been far exceeded." The club said on Friday that its supply of thousands of shirts with Casillas' No. 12 -- which were supposed to last the entire year -- "sold out in a few weeks." Porto did confirm that it will have more Casillas shirts on sale in November (EFE, 10/13). ... La Liga side Getafe, which is "concerned by low attendance for home games at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez," has contacted an advertising agency which has brought about a "surprising" measure: "Getafinder." It is a mobile app similar to Tinder -- a popular online dating app -- that "allows fans to anonymously find other fans in attendance." The app is currently only compatible for Android and "includes a geolocation system that means it only works in the Coliseum and its surroundings" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 10/13). ... Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais “was sentenced Monday” to pay €475,000 ($540,761) to the club’s former director of sport affairs Jean-François Créachcadec for firing him “without real and serious cause.” Créachcadec held his position with the club from ’11 until ’14, when the president of the club determined he “was paid too much for a job a secretary could do,” according to Créachcadec’s lawyer (20 MINUTES, 10/13).
