Names In The News

An All Blacks rugby jersey dating back 110 years "has been sold" for £180,000 ($276,000) at auction. DAVE GALLAHER wore the shirt during the 1905 tour of the British Isles and "swapped it" with Wales captain GWYN NICHOLLS after a match. It "had been expected to sell" for £20,000-£40,000 ($30,600-$61,300). After getting the shirt, Nicholls subsequently "gave it to a van boy at his laundry business," THOMAS MAHONEY, whose family has kept it ever since (BBC, 10/9). ... Former England captain DAVID BECKHAM’s phone "was hacked by News of the World journalists, the paper’s former head of news has admitted for the first time." In an interview with Channel 4 News on Friday, GREG MISKIW said that Beckham’s voicemails were accessed "routinely, all the time, over and over again." But he added that one of the paper’s most high profile stories -- when it claimed that Beckham had had an affair with his assistant, REBECCA LOOS, "a claim he has always denied -- had not come from hacking Beckham’s phone" (London GUARDIAN, 10/9).
