World Anti-Doping Agency Reports One In 100 Athletes Doping

Statistics from the World Anti-Doping Agency said that "more drug tests were carried out in football than in any other sport last year" and they also suggested that "at least one in every hundred athletes is doping," according to Josh Burrows of the LONDON TIMES. Of the 283,304 urine and blood samples submitted to WADA's 32 approved laboratories in '14, "more than 31,000 were from footballers, 144 of which tested positive, mainly for banned stimulants and anti-inflammatories." After football, the busiest drugs testers "work in athletics (25,830 samples taken), cycling (22,471) and aquatics (12,120)." Across every sport in which a WADA-approved drug-testing regime exists, "3,153 samples (1.11 percent) showed evidence of doping while 713 samples (0.25 percent) were deemed 'atypical,' meaning that they warranted further investigation." The highest percentage of positive tests in '14 came at the World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation & World Powerlifting Congress, "where six of the eight athletes tested showed signs of doping" (LONDON TIMES, 10/7).
