Football League Reveals Average Ticket Price, Fans Unite To Protest

The Football League announced ticket prices "across its three divisions" over the '14-15 season was £14.08 ($21.31), according to the BBC. In "the championship the average cost" was £15.65 ($23.69), in League One it was £11.72 ($17.74) and in League Two it was £11.58 ($17.53). In '14 the BBC's Price of Football study found "ticket prices had risen at almost twice the rate of the cost of living since 2011." Football League CEO Shaun Harvey said that the average prices, which the Football League calculated for the first time, "showed that its clubs continue to offer value for money" (BBC, 10/1). The BBC's Alistair Magowan reported fans from all 20 Premier League clubs and 10 championship teams will "join forces this weekend to protest about the cost of tickets." The coordinated protests will call for a £20 ($30) "cap on away ticket prices." Fans intend to display banners at matches "including the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool, and Arsenal's home game against ManU" (BBC, 10/1).

GATE REVENUE: Gate statements from the Football League clubs reveal that clubs generated a combined gate revenue of more than £213M ($322M) last season and sold more than 15.1 million tickets. In addition to, and not included in, those figures were a further 1.3 million free admissions, with the overwhelming majority being young fans that were given the opportunity to experience live football for the first time (Football League).
