Ligue 1 Side Marseille Fans Boycott Paris St. Germain Game Over Crowd Punishment

Ligue 1 side Marseille supporters "will boycott Sunday's league fixture" against Paris St. Germain in the wake of crowd trouble that marred its recent home game against Lyon, according to Mark Rodden of ESPN. Play "was held up for over 20 minutes at the Stade Velodrome during the Lyon game on Sept. 20." As an initial punishment, Marseille was "forced to close two stands for Sunday's home match against Angers." Given that the club is set to be hit with further sanctions next month, the main Marseille fan clubs "have decided not to travel to Paris for what is always a highly charged fixture." Christian Cataldo, a spokesperson for a group known as the Dodgers, said the decision was designed to calm the situation and "to show our good will." But "he also indicated that it might not be wise to visit the Parc des Princes in the current climate since the fan clubs in question are under scrutiny from authorities following the Lyon game." He said, "If there is the slightest little problem, we'll get hit with a truncheon" (ESPN, 9/29).
