Castleford Tigers Close To Moving Into $204.5M New Stadium

Super League rugby side Castleford's move to a new stadium "moved a step closer" Monday when final approval was given for a £135M ($204.5M) development at Glasshoughton, according to Ian Laybourn of the PA. The scheme, on land near junction 32 of the M62, will "deliver a 10,000-capacity community stadium for the Tigers as well as a retail park and country park, creating around 2,000 new jobs in the area." Leader of Wakefield Council Peter Box said "It's not just a great day for Castleford Tigers but a great day for the town of Castleford. It's going to help with the regeneration of the town." Castleford has been in the Wheldon Road ground since 1927 and CEO Steve Gill says that the club "needs to move into modern premises in order to retain their Super League status" (PA, 9/28).
