Bangladesh Tour Still In Limbo For Cricket Australia Over Safety Concerns

Cricket Australia officials have met with the country's top security and intelligence representatives "but no decision yet on future of two-Test tour," according to Dave Middleton of CRICKET.COM.AU. CA's security entourage has met with the "upper echelons of Bangladesh's national security and intelligence services" in talks that will help to determine the future of the planned two-Test series. However, the meetings have not secured any immediate result with Australia's Test team "still grounded with further talks scheduled for Tuesday." A CA spokesperson said, "There has been no change to the situation or our current position." CA Exec GM of Team Performance Pat Howard confirmed that CA had "reserved flights for the team to depart Australia on Tuesday night, with the team scheduled to play a three-day warm-up match in Fatullah starting on Saturday." Howard: "The advice we got was pretty direct against Australians and we want to make sure we're doing our due diligence. You just can't take these things lightly" (CRICKET.COM.AU, 9/28). SUPERSPORT reported Bangladesh "promised on Monday to provide the Australian cricket team with the highest level of security, saying it was shocked they were considering cancelling a tour on fears militants could target Australians." After meeting CA officials in Dhaka, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that the Aussies would "get security usually reserved for visiting heads of state if they went ahead with the tour starting this week." Khan: "The highest security protocol will be provided for the Australian cricket team" (SUPERSPORT, 9/28).
