Event Notes: Singapore Grand Prix Organizers Want Tighter Security

Singapore Grand Prix organizers are "considering tighter security for next year's race, with higher fences and more marshals," after a man intruded on the track during last weekend's Formula 1 event. FIA said in a statement on Saturday that it had "received a report from Gabriel Tan, the clerk of the course at the Singapore race." The FIA statement said, "The Singapore Grand Prix organization is currently studying plans to increase security in identified areas" (REUTERS, 9/26). ... Tonga Rugby Chair Epi Taione "has accused World Rugby of being out of touch colonialists and told the governing body to give the Pacific Island nations the same money and voting rights as the sport's elite." Tonga was upset 17-10 by Georgia in their Rugby World Cup Group C opener last week, with former back-row forward Taione "blaming a lack of funds from the world governing body for their woes." Taione: "They want us to compete but we get $1.58 million a year, while Argentina, New Zealand and the other SANZAR (South Africa, New Zealand and Australia) countries have received $18 million before the tournament. The money should be evenly distributed" (REUTERS, 9/26). ... An additional 1,500 tickets "have been made available for Northern Ireland's crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Greece at Windsor Park next month." Ongoing development work at the stadium "means capacity for the game will be increased to 11,700." The extra tickets "will only go to fans on the Irish FA's mailing list, who will be sent a priority link to purchase tickets" (BBC, 9/25).
