German State Ministers Expect Economic Boost From Potential Olympics In '24

The economy ministers of German states Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein "are expecting an economic boost for Northern Germany from possible Olympic Games in '24," according to the SID. Hamburg Economic Senator Frank Horch: "In addition to the tourism in the North, the construction industry would hugely benefit, which could lead to sustainable economic growth." Frank's counterpart, Reinhard Meyer from Schleswig-Holstein, said, "Getting the Olympic Games would have an effect like an economic stimulus package and could result in an investment boom in the area of traffic infrastructure." Hamburg's bid for the 2024 Games "still hinges on a public referendum." For the bid to go ahead, organizers "need a simple majority, and at least 20% of all voting eligible residents have to turn out and cast a ballot" (SID, 9/24).
