Spanish Football League President Javier Tebas: 'If Spain Breaks Up, So Will La Liga'

Spanish Football League (LFP) President Javier Tebas published a tweet referring to this week's regional elections in Catalonia and "the option of Catalan independence," according to AS. He tweeted, "If Spain breaks up, so will La Liga. We hope that we never get to such an absurd situation." Tebas was inferring that if one day Catalonia does gain independence, "Espanyol and Barcelona as well as other clubs from the region" will not be part of La Liga. Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu also aired his views on how an independent Catalonia would affect the club. He said, "There are elections in Catalonia in the coming weeks. Barça have shown that we have no involvement in the electoral campaign; we have always spoken only about sport, not politics. I understand that politicians need to do what they have to do. Right now, Barça is neutral, we are on the outside of the campaign and that is our position on the issue" (AS, 9/21). In Madrid, Moisés Llorens reported Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) President Miguel Cardenal said, "Today team's finances come from TV revenue. In a country of 8 million people you could become a team like Ajax or Celtic ... and reach as far as the second round or quarterfinals of the Champions League. ... It seems like a joke to me to consider where the teams would play if there is [Catalan] independence, with all that could happen in this country and the situations of tension that could be generated" (AS, 9/21).
