Football Notes: CONMEBOL Approves Reform Plan Following FIFA Scandal

CONMEBOL has approved a reform plan after it was "caught up in the corruption scandal that has swept the sport and plunged governing body FIFA into crisis." CONMEBOL said its exec committee had approved a "comprehensive review of the management model and the organizational structure." Ernst & Young had been called in to implement the reforms and the audit firm started work at the confederation's headquarters in Asunción, Paraguay on Monday. Of 14 officials and sports marketing execs indicted in the U.S. in May on bribery, money laundering and wire fraud charges involving more than $150M in payments, eight were from South America (REUTERS, 9/15). ... League Championship side Blackburn Manager Gary Bowyer "called for the introduction of goal-line technology in the Championship after his side were denied a point at Fulham." Rovers "were trailing 2-1 when Grant Hanley's effort crossed the line before it was hacked clear by Jamie O'Hara." Referee Tony Harrington "waved away appeals and Bowyer has urged Football League chiefs to mirror the Premier League and bring in technology." Bowyer: "There's a massive prize in this league at the end of the season" (BBC, 9/13).
