Leaked Dakar Rally Map Has Race Starting In Buenos Aires, Concluding In Rosario

Dakar Rally organizer ASO "has been silent" since Aug. 24, when it was announced that Peru withdrew as a host of the race, according to Héctor Martínez of AS. Per a map that has been leaked, "but not confirmed by ASO," the race will leave from Buenos Aires and finish -- "as was scheduled in the initial itinerary" -- in Rosario, Argentina. Some important figures in the competition, like Argentine rally driver Orly Terranova, "have let it be seen that this will be the route of the race," which will be held from Jan. 3-16.

This alternative "seems like the most logical choice." Organizers tried to convince Chile, which chose to pull out as a host in April, to join the '16 program. Buenos Aires "now seems like the natural starting point as a port with the capacity for the arrival by sea of the participating vehicles." The city also has "incalculable experience with logistics to hold a competition of this caliber" (AS, 9/14).
