Names In The News

BRAD HADDIN has become the "latest member of Australia's beaten Ashes squad to announce his international retirement." The 37-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, who retired from one-day internationals earlier this year after "helping Australia to World Cup glory," joins MICHAEL CLARKE and CHRIS ROGERS in "bowing out in the wake of Ashes defeat." He will also stop playing for New South Wales, his domestic state team, but will continue in the Twenty20 Big Bash League for the Sydney Sixers (LONDON TIMES, 9/9). ... England Manager ROY HODGSON will "not be given a new deal until after Euro 2016" to avoid the "unsavoury position" that emerged under Italian FABIO CAPELLO, the FA announced. Capello, then the England manager, signed a new contract prior to the 2010 World Cup, but England lost to Germany in the second round. FA CEO MARTIN GLENN said, "Roy is very comfortable with the situation." Hodgson's current contract runs out after Euro 2016 (BBC, 9/9). ... An MP accused by British athlete PAULA RADCLIFFE of "implicating her in allegations of blood doping has said that was not his intention." Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee Chair JESSE NORMAN suggested London Marathon winners and medalists and "potentially, British athletes" were under suspicion. Radcliffe, 41, was not named but said she "categorically denies" cheating. Norman said that his comments were "taken out of context" (BBC, 9/9). ... League Championship side Hull City player JAKE LIVERMORE "is set to escape a ban from the FA, despite testing positive for cocaine, due to extenuating circumstances." Failing an "in-competition drugs test for a Class A drug like cocaine carries a maximum punishment of a two-year ban." However, Livermore "had turned to the drug in a state of depression after the tragic loss of his new-born baby in May last year" (London DAILY MAIL, 9/9). ... A new film about Manager BRIAN CLOUGH's "glory years at Nottingham Forest has the support of his family -- unlike the previous effort." I Believe in Miracles, which will have its premiere at Forest's City Ground on Oct. 11, tells the story of the "unprecedented five-year period when Clough took the club from Division Two to the old First Division title and two European Cup successes." The last attempt to capture Clough on the big screen was the film version of the book The Damned United, "which seriously upset his two sons" NIGEL and SIMON for "various inaccuracies and highlighting his drinking" (DAILY MAIL, 9/7).
