Four-Team American Football League Introduced In Mexico City

The Liga Profesional de Fútbol Americano (American Football Professional League) was introduced on Tuesday in Mexico City, according to ESPN. The league will begin in February with four teams, a number that is expected to grow within two years. Juan Carlos Vázquez, who will be the league's operating president, said that initially all four teams will be based at the "Palillo" Martínez Stadium in Mexico City, which has recently been remodeled. League execs, representatives of Mexico's National Commission for Physical Culture & Sport (CONADE) and three of the four head coaches -- Rafael Duk, José Antonio Sandoval and Ernesto Alfaro -- addressed topics including the calendar and player payment. The season will consist of 13 games -- 12 in the regular season -- and all players "will receive payments." At first, all four clubs "will be managed by the league and later it will look for individual owners, copying the system initially used by Major League Soccer in the U.S." (ESPN, 9/1).
