Russian Broadcasters Lose Rights To Crucial Euro Qualifier Over Missed UEFA Payments

On Monday, Russian football fans were shocked by the news that they may be unable to watch a TV broadcast of a crucial Euro 2016 qualifier between Russia and Sweden as two state-run broadcasters, Channel One and VGTRK, lost their TV rights to the tournament. Just days before the game, its TV broadcast is not scheduled to be broadcast by either Channel One or VGTRK's Rossiya 1, the two networks that have alternated airing Russia's Euro qualifiers so far.

MISSED PAYMENT: The Russian news agency TASS quoted an anonymous senior exec in the Russian media industry as saying that UEFA stripped the two broadcasters of the TV rights to Euro qualifiers due to failure to make applicable payments. UEFA, VGTRK and Channel One would not comment on the situation. The Russia-Sweden qualifier is scheduled to be played at Moscow's Otkrytiye Arena on Saturday.
