Executive Transactions

Former Brazil int'l JORGINHO was presented as the new coach of Brasileiro club Vasco da Gama on Monday. The '94 World Cup winner takes over for CELSO ROTH, who was fired in the dressing room after the Rio de Janeiro club's 1-0 loss to Coritiba on Saturday. The club currently occupies last place in the Brasileiro table, "having earned just 13 points from 19 games thus far," and is facing the prospect of being relegated for the third time in the past eight years (ESPN, 8/17). ... The Irish FA has elected a new chairman -- Danske Bank UK CEO GERRY MALLON. The Cambridge University graduate replaces LESLIE CAUL, "who has served his maximum five years in the role and will stay on the IFA's Executive board for another 12 months as an independent director" (BELFAST TELEGRAPH, 8/18). ... The NBA Chicago Bulls named former player TONI KUKOC Special Adviser to the President & COO MICHAEL REINSDORF (Bulls). Reinsdorf said that Kukoc's duties "will be 'wide-ranging,' from relating to international players to talking to business partners and fans" (AP, 8/17). ... League One club Doncaster Rovers named LIAM SCULLY COO. This new position was formed to provide a strategic overview for all ongoing and future projects with the club. Scully is the former CEO of the club's Foundation (Doncaster Rovers).

HIRD LEAVES ESSENDON: Australian Football League side Essendon coach JAMES HIRD and the club "agreed to part ways on Monday night when Hird tendered his resignation." While announcing the decision on Tuesday, the two parties "stressed it was the only way the club, still mired in the supplements saga" which broke in Feb. '13, could become a "normal football club again." It was an "intriguing call by Hird, considering he had been steadfast in his innocence." Hird has "regularly said he would one day give his full version of events about the supplements and injecting program but all but confirmed he had signed a non-disparagement clause" as part of his settlement. Hird: "When I get the opportunity I will tell the story that I think is the way it happened. Today is not that day" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 8/18).

FMF RESHUFFLING: The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) made "several personnel announcements Monday, but one top position remains vacant -- the men's national team manager." HÉCTOR GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU will serve as president of the refereeing committee while SANTIAGO BAÑOS will be sporting director for national teams. FERNANDO CERRILLA, previously the FMF's general secretary, steps into the role of operating director of national teams. GUILLERMO CANTÚ is the new general secretary. Cantú said Monday that the FMF is "yet to make a formal offer to a manager" (GOAL, 8/17).
