Spanish Basketball League President Francisco Roca Opposed To 19-Team ACB

The Spanish Basketball League (ACB) "has a more than interesting fire" with the topic of Ourense, the acceptance of its promotion and the possibility of having to face a league with 19 teams after the readmission of previously relegated club Fuenlabrada, according to MARCA. The fact that Spain's Superior Sports Council (CSD) ruled in favor of Ourense "has changed the rules of the game and now the ACB faces a complicated situation." ACB President Francisco Roca said, "My personal intention is that it is not a league of 19 clubs, it would be a disaster for the ACB and would create for us a mountain of scheduling problems. The normal and desirable thing is to have a league of 18 clubs, consider four more matchdays at maximum, and more this season with possible Olympic qualifiers and Olympics, it is not the ideal situation, or even close." He added, "We  have not received pressure from the big teams, opinions yes. Not only from the big teams. I believe that in general the feeling of the ACB clubs is that we are going to be a league of 18." Of the ruling by the CSD, he said, "The CSD is not ordering us to register Ourense, it is not an order. We have not done it, of course, it is not the order that we have received, and what we are going to do is gather legal opinions to walk on secure ground. We will have this next week" (MARCA, 8/13).
