Australian Press Reacts To Ashes Thrashing, Calls Test 'Disaster'

The Australian newspapers "sharpened their pitchforks and began sticking them in after Michael Clarke’s side were bowled out for just 60 runs by a rampant England in the first day of the fourth Test at Trent Bridge," according to Sam Dean of the LONDON TIMES. England "tore into Australia’s batting line-up, with Stuart Broad returning career-best figures of 8 for 15" as it was dismissed in just 18.3 overs. The Australian media "has grown increasingly critical of Clarke and it did not hold back" when it came to assessing Thursday’s debacle in Nottingham. The Sydney Morning Herald spelt out the bare fact, “93 minutes, 18.3 overs, 60 runs, 10 wickets: It’s Pomicide” before describing match as a “nightmare in Nottingham.” The Courier Mail, "which famously vowed not to use the name of Stuart Broad when he refused to walk after edging to a slip fielder in the 2013 Ashes series," put the bowler’s picture on its front page, alongside the word, “Shocker.” The back page "was similarly dramatic." It screamed, “Disaster." The Australian Daily Telegraph "was equally downbeat, if not a little more understated," simply saying, “As bad as it gets" (LONDON TIMES, 8/6).
