Judge Reverses Ruling To Reform Rio De Janeiro's Marina Da Glória For 2016 Games

Reforms to Rio de Janeiro's Marina da Glória, the stage for 2016 Olympic sailing, "can once again begin" after the federal government reversed its decision to prohibit the Historic Patrimony & National Artistic Institute (IPHAN) from continuing its construction, according to Vinicius Konchinski of UOL. Earlier this month, Judge Marcelo Pereira da Silva understood that IPHAN "did not complete lawful requirements prior to beginning Olympic construction on the marina." One week later, da Silva "changed his mind and freed the execution of the project." The Association of Rio de Janeiro Residents (FAM-Rio) "tried to stop construction." For FAM-Rio, the reforms would "lose the characterization of its original project," which was to preserve the marina. However, da Silva "realized that he should have never evaluated" the project because of its "time crunch in which it can be built." Marina da Glória is located on the "edge of the Guanabara Bay and will serve as a support point for the Olympic sailing competitions" in '16 (UOL, 7/13).
