League Notes: Northern Territory Racing Commission Approves Live Betting

The Northern Territory Racing Commission, which has "regulatory responsibility for William Hill and a swag of other bookies," approved the British betting firm's "click to call" feature despite admitting there was "no legal precedent for it and there was a chance it breached federal law." William Hill's domestic competitors and anti-gambling advocates said that the product, which "circumvents a ban on live betting except by telephone, breaches the Interactive Gambling Act" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 7/10). ... The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced a reward of Rs 21 lakh ($33,000) for the Indian women's team "in the wake of the series victory over New Zealand" on Wednesday. BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya said that the team had "shown remarkable character to come back from 1-2 to win the series" (THE HINDU, 7/9). ... Sports administrator Brig. P.K. Muralidharan Raja on Wednesday launched the Indian Boxing Council to "promote professional boxing in the country." Raja said that his effort would "not be a hindrance for amateur boxers." Raja: "We respect amateur boxing. It is essential for the sport's existence. We are not making any noise against them." The IBC will identify boxers from "different zones in order to prepare a pool of prospective fighters" (THE HINDU, 7/9).
