FBI Reportedly To Investigate Former Mexican Football Federation Execs

The FBI is reportedly "preparing an investigation" into current and former top Mexican Football Federation (FMF) execs for possible bribery payments, according to INFORMADOR. Former FIFA Exec Chuck Blazer "reportedly confessed that there was a payment of bribes" for Mexico's hosting of the 2003 Gold Cup and possible match-fixing of a game Mexico lost to Trinidad & Tobago during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. Those under suspicion are former FMF President Alberto de la Torre, former Treasurer Justino Compeán, former Secretary General Gonzalo Fernández and former Organización de Televisión Iberoamericana (OTI) President Guillermo Cañedo. It is suspected that the "fixing of the game against Trinidad & Tobago" helped Mexico's national team "avoid suspension after players Aarón Galindo and Salvador Carmona tested positive for doping during the 2005 Confederations Cup" (INFORMADOR, 6/27).
