League Notes: Seven Arrested In Catania, Italy On Suspicion Of Match-Fixing

Serie B club Catania President Antonino Pulvirenti is "one of seven people arrested over suspected match-fixing" involving some of the club's matches. Pulvirenti's deputy, Pablo Cosentino, and former Dir of Sport Daniele Delli Carri were also arrested. Catania police said that the seven people arrested are accused of committing "fraud in sporting competition" (BBC, 6/23). ... Former Socceroo Robbie Hooker said that he will appeal Football Federation Australia's decision to sanction him for betting on A-League matches while a registered player, "albeit in an over-35s amateur league." Hooker was hit with the sanction -- a A$1,000 ($774) fine that has been suspended -- on Monday, "and although he was not named" in FFA's official press release, he is "determined to overturn the ruling" (THE AGE, 6/23).
