Arena Amazônia Continues To Struggle As 7,000 State Final Attendees Generate $30,000

One year after hosting the World Cup, the Arena Amazônia in Manaus, Brazil "continues to confirm itself as a 'white elephant'" as only 6,787 people went to this weekend's Campeonato Amazonense final, according to ESTADÃO. The match, which generated a revenue of R$93,825 ($30,312), was "only the sixth at the Arena Amazônia this year." In January, a "triangle friendly was organized in Manaus" for Brasileiro sides São Paulo, Flamengo and Vasco, but the arena was "far from full." This year, the stadium's administrators have "not yet been able to attract any large club for official games," compared to Cuiabá's Arena Pantanal, which has three Série A matches scheduled thus far for the remainder of the year in addition to the "more than 35" it has already hosted (ESTADÃO, 6/22).
