South American FIFA Execs Received Gold Watches Offered As Qatar 2022 Bribes

A "gold watch was the present offered" by former Emir of Qatar Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to each of the South American FIFA execs who "agreed to support" the country to host the 2022 World Cup, according to Rangel & Rizzo of FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO. The watches were "delivered on January 19, 2010, during a lunch" at Rio de Janeiro's Itanhangá Golf Club organized by then Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) President Ricardo Teixeira. In addition to Teixeira, former CONMEBOL President Nicolás Leoz, former Argentine FA President Julio Grondona and former FIFA President João Havelange also "participated in the meeting." Teixeira, Leoz and Grondona "were the only representatives of the continent" present at the 2022 Cup vote. The watches "served to seal the support" of the South American leaders. The meeting was also "made secretly" and Teixeira did not publicize it on the CBF website (FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO, 6/16). In a separate piece, Rangel & Rizzo reported Teixeira "could not be located to be questioned about the present received from the Emir of Qatar" in Jan. '10. However, last Thursday, Teixeira "denied" that he received money as a bribe to vote for Qatar 2022. Teixeira: "I voted for Qatar, but I didn't receive a penny for it. Not in [Brazilian] reals, not in dollars and not in euros." Havelange and Leóz "also could not be contacted" (FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO, 6/16).
