Franchise Notes: Real Madrid Reluctantly Congratulates Rival Barcelona

Real Madrid congratulated Barcelona on its Champions League triumph, but "made the Catalan club pay to read the reluctant 'well done' message." Officials at the Camp Nou were reportedly "stunned when they received a letter from their great rivals" but had to foot the €23.98 ($27.07) for postage on delivery. Barça had "already noted that Real Madrid had not congratulated them on Twitter for their success in Berlin" (London DAILY MAIL, 6/15). ... Ligue 1 side Lille has been ordered to pay Belgian club Genk €300,000 ($338,600) for the '10 transfer of Divock Origi. The Belgium striker, now with Liverpool, "began his footballing education in his homeland with Genk," leaving it at the age of 15 before signing youth terms with Lille. Genk appealed to FIFA seeking a "training compensation" fee but was denied as it "had not offered a contract to Origi before his departure." Genk successfully argued to the Court of Arbitration for Sport that it "could not offer Origi a contract under Belgian law because he was under the age of 16 at the time" (PA, 6/15).
