CBF President Says He Will Not Resign, Uses 'Crisis' To Spark CBF Changes

Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) President Marco Polo Del Nero went to a meeting at the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday and "rejected" the idea when he was "asked to resign," according to Fabrício Marques of GLOBO ESPORTE. To members of congress who "openly asked him about his participation in fraud" and corruption allegations in relation to the CBF, Del Nero "guaranteed" that he was not involved. He said, "I didn't know about it (CBF corruption schemes). ... I wanted to know what was happening." Del Nero "reassured" congress that he "would not leave his CBF presidency." He "guaranteed that he would stay until the end." Del Nero: "Those who resign have done something wrong. I won't resign. I'm going until the end of my term. I was elected democratically. I have an obligation" (GLOBO ESPORTE, 6/9).

TIME FOR CHANGE: In São Paulo, Raphael Ramos reported amid a corruption scandal that took former CBF President José Maria Marin to prison in Zurich, Del Nero is "preparing an Ethics Code" for the CBF, which he announced at Tuesday's meeting. The document "will be part of a CBF statute and will regulate the behavior and conduct of its leaders." The CBF Ethics Code is being written and prepared by Ernst & Young and "should be presented in the next few days." CBF Secretary General Walter Feldman said, "We hired a company to do this work. The CBF governing structure, risks and conformities are are going through a re-engineering process." The target of a congressional inquiry into corruption allegations, the CBF has "pushed itself in the last few days to show more transparency and already is revising all of its contracts" (ESTADÃO, 6/10). MAQUINA DO ESPORTE reported the "corruption crisis" in int'l football "could mark the end of the partnership" between the CBF and Pitch Int'l, which, in '12, took over from ISE in promoting and commercializing friendlies for the Brazilian national team. Del Nero said that the 10-year contract "would be reevaluated." Del Nero: "We're going to reevaluate all of that. We will do whatever is best for Brazil." The agreement was "signed during Marin's presidency" (MAQUINA DO ESPORTE, 6/9). FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO reported listing off things from his presidency's agenda, Del Nero "mentioned the possibility" of moving game broadcast times from 11pm local time to 10:40pm. He said, "We conducted public opinion survey about the time of 11pm and we spoke to [network] TV Globo about the population's worry, because games end too late. We should be moving it to 10:40pm, which was the maximum we could achieve. For 2016, I believe that we will be able to better this" (FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO, 6/9).
