FIFA: President Rousseff Says Brazil 'Without Motive' For 2014 World Cup Bribes

Brazil President Dilma Rousseff said that Brazil "did not have 'any reason' to be involved in the payment of bribes" to host the 2014 World Cup, according to Flávia Foreque of FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO. Rousseff: "Brazil, being the country that won the most World Cups of all time, the country that made, I believe, the Cup of Cups, did not have a reason to engage in any corruption process, of any form, to bring the Cup to Brazil." Dilma "recognized that there were 'strong indications' for the investigation of corruption" at the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) and that the football industry "needs to be 'open and transparent.'" Rousseff admitted that, should proof arise of an "irregularity during the process, Brazilian society has 'every interest' in identifying those involved." She added, "This process began in Brazil and generated a lot of resources during the Cup, which is good for the whole world, if they are absolutely transparent. ... Should it not be, we can be sure that the Brazilian people have every right to know who is responsible and punish them and guarantee that Brazil has another environment for football." According to Rousseff, the Brazilian federal police "are also trying to conduct an investigation in Brazil" (FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO, 6/9).
