More Than 5 Million Watch Germany-Ivory Coast Women's World Cup Match On ZDF

German public broadcaster ZDF "recorded more than 5 million viewers for its broadcast of the FIFA Women's World Cup match between Germany and Ivory Coast," according to Alexander Krei of DWDL. The match, which Germany won 10-0, attracted an average of 5.13 million viewers on Sunday. The number translated into a market share of 23.8%. In the target demographic 14-49, ZDF's game coverage from Canada, which started at 10am, obtained a 16% share as 1.29 million viewers tuned in (DWDL, 6/8). A record number of Canadians watched Canada's 1-0 victory in the opening match of the Women's World Cup. Preliminary overnight data from Numeris confirmed that 1.8 million viewers watched the game on CTV, TSN and RDS, making it the most-watched FIFA Women’s World Cup match ever. Overall, 5.6 million unique Canadian viewers tuned in for some or all of the Canada-China match, which took place in front of a record crowd in Edmonton. Audience levels peaked at 2.6 million viewers (TSN).

CANADIAN GRAND PRIX: DWDL also reported German free-to-air TV channel RTL drew 4.45 million viewers and had a 14.5% market share for its broadcast of Sunday's Canadian F1 Grand Prix. In the target demo, the race, which started at 8pm, obtained a 12.7% share as 1.29 million viewers watched Mercedes driver Lewis Hamiltion win the event (DWDL, 6/8). In a separate piece, Krei reported German pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland attracted an average of 310,000 to its broadcast of the race. In the target demo, Sky drew a 1.2% share.

ROLAND GARROS: The women's singles final between Serena Williams and Lucie Šafářová drew 320,000 viewers on Saturday on Eurosport. The number translated into a market share of 3.3%, along with 3.4% in the target demo. The following men's doubles final attracted 170,000 viewers. Eurosport's coverage of the men's singles final between Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka obtained a 3.8% market share as 430,000 viewers tuned in. In the target demo, Wawrinka's four-set victory obtained a 3.4% share (DWDL, 6/8).

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL: In London, Mark Sweney reported Sky's coverage of the Champions League final between Barcelona and Juventus drew fewer than 500,000 viewers, as its sports chief complained "this has been the worst season ever for audiences." Its coverage of the final on Saturday night drew an average of just 497,000 viewers, "almost a third the audience it attracted for the 2014 final." Sky and co-broadcaster ITV, which attracted an average of 4.18 million viewers and a 22.5% share, "have lost the TV rights to BT from next season" after it paid an "eye-watering" £900M for exclusivity (GUARDIAN, 6/8).

INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE: INDIAN TELEVISION reported with a 7.4 rating, the Indian Premier League finale played between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings "registered the highest viewership of the season." On the other hand, the qualifier match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and CSK "emerged as the second most viewed match of the season" with a 5.6 rating, while with a 5.5 rating the first qualifier between CSK and MI "grabbed the third slot." TV rating auditor TAM analytics showed that IPL 8 was sampled by 192 million unique viewers (INDIAN TELEVISION, 6/5).
