Brazil Launches 200-Person Cyber Protection Team For 2016 Olympics

The Brazilian Cyber Defense Center (CDCiber) announced that Brazil will have nearly 200 specialists, military personnel and technicians "working on cyber protection" during the 2016 Olympic Games, according to Tahiane Stochero of GLOBO. During the sporting events, the CDCiber's work will be "integrated with professionals from three other federal government centers that monitor incidents and have specialists in the areas of information technology, security and engineering," in addition to technicians from the federal police's Cyber Crime Repression Service (SRCC), National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL) and the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN). For the Olympics, the number is "practically double" that of those who worked in cyber protection during the World Cup. CDCiber said, "For the Olympics, the working model will be the same [as the World Cup], essentially, since last time it was successful. Things are evolving, as a result of lessons learned from previous events ... Cyber threats are countless ... All countries, in different levels, depending on their situations, are exposed to these threats. The most clear threats for the Olympic Games are hacktivism and cyber crime, in which terrorism is always a significant worry when dealing with large events from an Olympics" (GLOBO, 6/2).
