Queensland Racing Crackdown Could Effect Integrity Units' Future Actions

Tuesday's "disembowelling of the administrative core of horse, harness and greyhound racing in Queensland may be a telling moment that guides how integrity units operate in future," according to Patrick Bartley of the CANBERRA TIMES. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced all three of Queensland's racing codes "would have their boards abolished less than 24 hours after live-baiting inquiry commissioner Alan MacSporran tabled a report on the embattled greyhound racing industry." The fallout has been "immense." The discovery of "hundreds of greyhound carcasses in paddocks in Queensland left authorities and the community disgusted." The Queensland government "has not held back." With "three boards now gone, and a show-cause notice hanging over the Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon," the racing industry in that state "is in disarray." The Victorian government has "kept its own counsel on the future of racing administration in the state." Spring Street is "not giving racing administrators a free hand, but it is watching and waiting to see how the next few months play out" (CANBERRA TIMES, 6/2).
