Mexican Baseball League Clears Arellano Brothers' Push To Bring Team To Mazatlán

Mazatlán, Mexico "could host" a Mexican Baseball League club after club presidents approved "of work continuing on this project," according to Miguel Boada Nájera of LA AFICIÓN. After a meeting lasting more than three hours, the LMB's Presidents Assembly authorized brothers Juan José and Erick Arellano -- who own LMB club Leones de Yucatán -- to continue with the project to have a team in Mazatlán, "though the year and path for this to happen have not been defined." Currently, "the ways for Mazatlán to become part of the LMB are through the acquisition of a current franchise or an addition to the number of teams" (LA AFICIÓN, 5/29). ESPN's Rubén Castro reported LMB President Plinio Escalante said, "Right now there is no franchise on sale, but we are authorizing Leones de Yucatán, Erick and Juan José Arellano, to acquire one when the circumstances allow it. What we are asking them is that they make it very clear who will stay with one team or who will be with the other, so that there is no conflict of interest" (ESPN, 5/30).
