Former NRL Referees Boss Says Officials Shoudn't Be Forced To Explain Calls

Former National Rugby League referees boss Bill Harrigan insisted that "he 'can't see what would be gained' by forcing referees to front the media straight after games to explain dubious calls," despite Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart abruptly ending his press conference after Saturday's loss to Brisbane, according to Jon Tuxworth of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. Concerned he would cop another heavy fine for criticising referees, Stuart "fielded just one question and made a 25-second statement before walking out." Stuart: "No, it wasn't one of those games, mate. [NRL head of football] Toddy Greenberg, he was at the game tonight and I just really hope he saw what I saw. It's a lot healthier for our club if we don't go any further into this press conference. I have respect for all the media, it's got nothing to do with you, but it's just a lot healthier if I don't continue. Thanks." Harrigan "believes referees should not face the music at post-game press conferences." He said, "I don't know there's much to be gained out of going off at a referee at the decisions they've made, prior to reviewing them. Sometimes you can do that, and only when you go back and see the review you see they got it correct" (SMH, 5/31).
