Event Notes: Italian Women's Cup Final Off After Official's Alleged 'Lesbians' Comment

The Italian women’s cup final "has been called off" as a result of alleged comments by a senior football official referring to female players as a "bunch of lesbians." The association representing female players and coaches confirmed that Brescia was scheduled to play Tavagnacco on Saturday "but the match has been scrapped" (London GUARDIAN, 5/19). ... University of Texas Athletic Dir Steve Patterson said that the Longhorns "could play football in Mexico City by 2020 as Texas considers expanding its brand internationally." Patterson said that Texas "has a natural advantage because of its proximity to what he considers to be a lucrative fan base in Mexico" (AP, 5/18). ... Wembley officials have apologized to League Championship side Middlesbrough fans "for misspelling their team's name on tickets for the Championship play-off final." Tickets for Monday's game with Norwich called the club "Middlesborough." Tickets "will still be valid for Monday's game" (BBC, 5/19). ... The Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV) "announced that it reached an agreement" with the Int'l Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to host a round of the World Beach Volleyball Championship at Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach on Sept. 1-6. The event "will serve as a test" for the 2016 Olympics (BAHIA NOTÍCIAS, 5/18).
