Spanish Court Delays Ruling On Legality Of La Liga Strike To Thursday

The Spanish High Court said it "will now wait until Thursday to decide the legality" of a threatened Spanish Football League (LFP) strike by the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE), according to Dermot Corrigan of ESPN. LFP President Javier Tebas said that Barcelona could be crowned La Liga champions "without kicking a ball this weekend if a planned players' strike goes ahead." Tebas has been "strongly critical" of both AFE President Luis Rubiales and Spanish Football Federation RFEF President Ángel María Villar for their roles in proposing the strike, "which remained due to go ahead after a mediation meeting on Tuesday ended without any significant progress being made." Speaking after Tuesday's "inconclusive mediation attempt," Tebas said that "legally speaking any games that do not go ahead would simply be removed from the official season records," which would leave Real Madrid "unable to secure the four points they would require to overtake their rivals." Tebas: "The right to strike means the fixture which is stopped is still fulfilled. That means it would not be recovered" (ESPN, 5/13).
