Australian Football League Plans U.S.-Style Draft Days

An American-style interactive national draft extravaganza is being shaped by the Australian Football League with the first stages to be "unveiled to the 18 club chiefs on Thursday," according to Wilson & Quayle of THE AGE. The league "proposed staging the draft over two days" beyond '15 with the possibility in coming years of just one or two club representatives at the televised event in the style of the NFL feature film "Draft Day." The remainder of recruiters and club bosses called in picks. The AFL is "understood to have strongly considered a lucrative offer to stage the 2015 draft" in the West Australian mining town of Karatha in that state's Pilbara region. The Gold Coast also remains an option with the new Queensland government "putting forward a new three-year deal to the competition after the previous government ended the last arrangement." The third and "equally likely" alternative will see the draft "return to Melbourne." The AFL has "not yet set a date or a venue for the 2015 draft, which will most likely be staged on November 26 following the International Rules game" in Ireland (THE AGE, 5/13).
