Event Notes: Foz Do Iguaçu To Host Futsal Copa América In September

The Brazilian Futsal Federation (CBFS) and CONMEBOL "sealed a deal" to announce the host of the futsal Copa América in September. The tournament will be held in Foz do Iguaçu in the Brazilian state of Paraná. Paranaense Futsal Federation (FPF) VP Eilson Veiga said, "Foz do Iguaçu is a city that breathes futsal, has an excellent sports gymnasium and a network of hotels capable of tending very well to the 10 South American teams that will participate in the competition" (BAHIA NOTÍCIAS, 5/9). ... The World Surf League announced that the Brazilian round of the World Surf Championship "would not begin" on Monday as planned due to lack of waves. Tuesday is the "next chance for the competition" (LANCEPRESS, 5/11). ... The UAE will host a Pakistan versus India cricket series in December made up of three Tests, five ODIs and two T20 internationals. The series "will be held in UAE." The two nations have "agreed to play five series in the next eight years" (GULF NEWS, 5/10). ... Palestine FA President Jibril Rajoub said that Saudi Arabia "will travel to the West Bank to face Palestine in a World Cup qualifier in June." Rajoub: "I have just received a message from the Saudis saying that they are coming, it's a great show of support." Three-time Asian champion Saudi Arabia, which has played at four World Cups, "will be the highest-profile team to visit Palestine" since it was authorized to play World Cup qualifiers at home in '11 (REUTERS, 5/11). ... FIBA announced the 2016 FIBA 3x3 World Championships will take place in Guangzhou, the third-largest city in China. The tournament will be held over the course of five days from Oct. 11-15, just outside the Tianhe Sport Complex. The Chinese Basketball Association will host the third edition of the biggest national-team 3x3 event -- the first outside of Europe (FIBA). ... V8 Supercars will "retain its hotly disputed short twin race format" for Saturday at this weekend's Winton SuperSprint but it "may be for the final time." The sport's commission will "meet face to face this week to discuss potential changes to the controversial" 60km race format, and there is the "potential for the structure of the Saturday of SuperSprint rounds to be changed" in time for the Triple Crown Darwin on May 19-21. A couple of suggestions for potential new formats are "in the mix, with the Commission to debate the options in Thursday’s meeting" (FOX SPORTS, 5/11).
