Agreement To Build Portuguese Side Sporting's Stadium Suspended Due To €600,000 Increase

Portuguese Primera Liga side Sporting Lisbon announced Saturday that it "suspended" the agreement with construction company Somague to build the João Rocha Pavilion for "not fulfilling a previously established agreement" and awarded the project to Ferreira Build Power instead, according to LUSA. Somague informed the Supervision Coordinator of Engineering Projects (FICOPE), which "coordinates the process" of construction of Sporting's stadium, on April 2 that it "would not be able to sign a contract under the initial negotiated terms" for the stadium's construction as it needed to increase provided funds from €7.2M to €7.8M. Despite factors for the increase, which included special facilities, air conditioning in several areas and installing an elevator and an electric platform for disabled access, FICOPE found that these "were costs that should have been included in the proposal." After looking further into cost adjustments, Sporting management "decided to suspend the process and 'ask its legal department to recollect facts in order to prosecute Somague for resulting damages from its conduct ... distorted agreement'" and "implying delays" for which the club "understands it should be repaid." Ferreira, which was "second in the tender for building the pavilion" and initially proposed to do so for €7.5M, signed a new contract with Sporting on Friday. Ferreira "agreed to have construction completed" by the end of '16 (LUSA, 5/9).
