Mexico City Sports Institute (Indeporte) Dir General Horacio de la Vega said that the city is "looking to host" Major League Baseball and NFL games in '16, according to Carlos Herrera Luyando of LA AFICÍON. He said, "With MLB we are very advanced with the new stadium that we are building with [Mexican Baseball League (LMB) club] Diablos Rojos President Alfredo Harp Helú. I was in N.Y. speaking with the VP of MLB and there are many baseball projects that are going to happen and we will announce them in the capital." De la Vega said of the NFL, "NFL execs have come to Mexico City to review alternatives in terms of facilities. There have been two visits, I believe there will be a third in a couple of months. There have been conversations with the NFL, we are focused on carrying out this project that also is a star that we lack in Mexico City." He admitted that Mexico City wants a regular-season MLB game, "and that this is more viable than an NFL game." De la Vega: "This is much closer to us. There are consistent, very direct talks. Harp Helú's own relationship with MLB is very important. There is great interest from the new commissioner of MLB to expand baseball in Mexico and Latin America; Mexico as a launching point. The stadium that will be built is a perfect place to have more regular season MLB games." An agreement with the NFL could "begin in '16 and last for three years, but this could be delayed another year," he added. De la Vega: "To be frank and honest I believe we are much closer to having a game for '17 or '18" (LA AFICÍON, 5/9).
