Brasileiro Side Flamengo President Pushes Change To Federation Leadership Elections

Brasileiro side Flamengo President Eduardo Bandeira de Mello "is willing to take a debate to Brasília to change legislation over the voting system" Brasileiro clubs follow to elect federation leaders, according to Nascimento & Suzuki of LANCENET. Bandeira de Mello believes that the "ideal" situation would be to "alter the Pelé law," which demands that clubs observe business laws and pay taxes within two years, to "occur via" the plan to restructuring club debt payments, the Medida Provisória. He said that the move "would be the only way to recuperate Rio de Janeiro football, which is going through 'technical and financial failures'" due to "poor administration" from the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation (FERJ). As it stands now, votes for federation leaders each hold six times more "value," depending on the impact and size of each club, a proportion that Bandeira de Mello "evaluated as insufficient." Bandeira de Mello said that it is "a great injustice" for a club such as Flamengo, which has "millions of fans and numerous titles, to have a vote that holds only six times more weight than irrelevant clubs" when it comes to making important decisions. He added, "A law alteration is the only way to end facades" (LANCENET, 5/7).
